Founded in 2015, Riverbourne Distillery is a boutique distillery based in Jingera, New South Wales. Head Distiller, Martin Pye, runs a one man show, mashing, fermenting, distilling and ageing his range of boutique whiskies and rums with the utmost attention to detail.
The distillery is located at the head of the Molonglo River, (feeding Canberra’s Lake Burley Griffen) and is fed by natural springs at an altitude of 1000 metres. This gives the Riverbourne Distillery an environment similar to many areas of Scotland.
Martin Pye is a third generation Pharmacist who studied his craft under the tutelage of Dean Jackson from Redland’s Distillery in a course designed by Bill Lark, the godfather of Australian whisky.
Adding to this acquired knowledge, Martin also studied microbiology, biochemistry, chemistry and mathematics. Such experience has given him an edge and a unique skill set of skills for a distiller who possesses a deep understanding of the processes involved in making the world’s finest spirits.

The Riverbourne Identity No. 4
From The Old Barrelhouse:
This Riverbourne Identity single malt whisky is the 4th release in the ‘Identity’ range. There’s a very subtle hit of peat in this pure malted whisky which has been aged in a medium charred French oak cask, that previously held red wine. This whisky carries itself with finesse as it evolves in the glass and will surely be another sell-out as its three predecessors.

The Riverbourne Enigma
From The Old Barrelhouse:
This latest creation from Martin Pye, Master Distiller at the Riverbourne distillery is called ‘Enigma’ – a name he only uses to describe his exceptional cask releases. Aged in old 60L Port barrel, its bottled at a cask strength of 63.4% alc with a limited run of only 100 bottles.
Martin has given us immediate access to this expression after he showcased it at the 2019 Sydney Whisky Fair for the very first time. The response was huge with the Enigma selling out at the Fair within 3 sessions. As Martin comments….. “It’s like angels dancing on your tongue.”

The Riverbourne Ultimatum
From The Old Barrelhouse:
The whisky spent the majority of its maturation in a red wine cask before been re-cast into an ex-rum and an ex-port cask and then cut to an ABV of 47%. Specially produced for the local markets, this is one whisky that screams ‘Collectable’ although we envisage it been enjoyed for what’s inside the bottle. 😉

We had the distinct pleasure of visiting for a weekend recently to get the full Riverbourne Experience™️ and could not have wished for more gracious and generous hosts.
Having been fortunate enough to have sampled several casks which were just on the cusp of qualifying as Whisky we can hand on heart say we are extremely excited by the nature, flavour, texture and maturity of the spirit being put forth at Riverbourne and it definitely stands apart from its Australian contemporaries.
It’s no Teachers Martin, but we think it goes alright…
